Volume 8 of Mahoromatic in hand (no spoilers)
« le: 07 janvier 2006 à 22:18:08 »

I just picked up my copy of Mahoromatic Volume #8.  I haven't had a chance to read it yet, so theirfore there are no spoilers.  I got it at Waldenbooks.  They didn't have it out on the shelves yet, but they pulled it from out back when I asked for it.

Great, I thought it wouldn't come out at all until March or April! I'll have to check Suncoast, or an online place like eBay or Amazon soon.

Hopefully this isn't one of those times when a place accidentally releases a book early and the books get reposessed and I'll be able to find one soon.

EDIT: Not listed anywhere on Amazon or eBay... I have a feeling it was indeed not intended to be released yet but already shipped to stores. Perhaps I'll have some luck at Suncoast if they're as nice as that store in Buffalo.

The release date from Tokopop was listed as 1/10/06.  Waldenbooks generally gets things out about a week early.

Oh, that's good; it should be released tomorrow anyway. =D I'll try to buy it soon...

I picked up a copy of Volume #7 today at Media Play (last on in stock).  I haven't read it yet, but the tease for #8 looks like a worse ending than the anime.
Here's hoping it wasn't as bad as you expected...  :?

Without giving too much away.  The ending of the Manga is significantly different than the Anime.  And although it is a somewhat better ending, it still makes me feel like Mahoro and Suguru got a raw deal.

On the other hand, it makes me feel all the worse about the ending of the Anime.

I don't want to say too much, since my opinion is somewhat shaded.  It's best that everyone read it and form their own opinion.

See? Told you it was quite different :)

Anyways, my shipment containing the manga just left Archonia's shop, so I should get it sometime this week.

Suncoast's entire manga section had to be recalled and thus they will have absolutely none for approximately the next month. Thus, I went to Barnes & Noble, which didn't have it in stock but they ordered it and should call me in 4-6 days when it arrives.

I say you can consider any ending you want canon; Gainax would have probably done the ending in a more similar way if they had been able to use source material for the ending. At least, that's my assumption before having read it.

It isn't even a matter of sugar-sprinkling.  GAINAX left out many of the details (forget the detail that are just wrong) that give the Manga ending some meaning, even if that ending leaves me hollow.

There is enough material in volume 8 (and some of volume 7) to make the series at least two episodes longer (volume 8 is slightly less than double the thickness of standard Tokyopop edition).  And even though the eventual end is better, it takes quite a bit of pain and suffering to get there.

I have just finished reading Volume 8. I'm not really sure what I think of it right now, as
it seemed that the eventual end was exactly the same as the anime's, though the way it got there was different (I didn't quite understand what Axel meant when he said that before, but now it is quite obvious to me.)
I do definitely agree that Volume 8 went about explaining everything much, much better than Na-Geanna did. But overall, it was still very much a "Gainax ending".

I just finished reading it in english, and I'm quite happy with it personally (it's much more understandable to me than in Japanese :D )

As everyone said, there was a lot of things explained.

I liked the bits about Nanami-chan and Minawa-chan, oh and Arc and her creator too, it was pretty funny to see them both :)

Actually I believe it leaves a lot of opportunity for fanfiction.

I have a question about the ending of the Mahoromatic manga.

Spoiler

The manga ends with Suguru meeting Mahoro after twenty years.  The first thing that he says to her is "I am not the same Suguru that you knew."  I first took this to mean that Suguru was ashamed of the person that he had become. However, after reading it a couple of times my perspecitve changed.  While I do think that shame is part of it, I believe that what he is actually saying in that scene is "I am not the same boy that was in love with you."  One of the reasons for this is his reaction to her, which is similiar to his reaction to her when he first discovered her at his house twenty years ago.  Also, it ends very similiar to the beginning of the series with a scene that shows both of them surrounded by flowers.  This disturbs me some what, because it makes me wonder if their relationship can work.  Here are some of the problems that I can see in their relationship.

1. To Mahoro, Suguru is still the same person he was twenty years ago when this is not true.  As a young boy, Suguru was shy and somewhat introverted but he did have a few very close friends.  As an adult, Suguru has closed off his heart to most people including his old friends.  He is polite to people in general, but he doesn't have anyone really close to him. This makes me wonder if Suguru will invite Mahoro back into his life.
2. Suguru doesn't need Mahoro the same way he did as a child.  As a child, he needed her as a not only a maid, but something of a mother figure.  As an adult, Suguru doesn't really need or show any interest in either.
3.  Their roles are now switched.  Mahoro is now the human, while Suguru is now the android (Well.. Cyborg at least)  This means that Suguru doesn't need Mahoro to physically protect him like she used to.  I know it can be argued that Suguru protected Mahoro, but it was Mahoro who finished most of the fights.

I have read the ending of the Mahoromatic manga and I have some questions.

Spoilers...

The series ends with Suguru and Mahoro meeting eachother after twenty years.  One of the first things that Suguru says to her is "I am not the same Suguru that you knew."  At first, I took this to mean that Suguru was ashamed of the person that he had become, but after I thought about it for a little while I realized what he was really saying is "I am not the same boy that was in love with you."  Part of the reason I believe this is his reaction to her and how the ending scene (the one where they are surrounded by flowers) is similiar to the beginning. This disturbs me because it makes me wonder if their relationship can actually work.  Here are some problems that I think they will have in their relationship.

1. To Mahoro, Suguru is the same boy that he once was twenty years ago when this is not true.  He is now very closed off compared to how he was as a fourteen year old boy and has cut off his conections from his once close friends.  He's polite to people, but he keeps them at an arms distance.  This makes me wonder if Suguru will allow Mahoro back into his life.
2. Their roles are now switched, Mahoro is human while Sugru is the android (Well.. cyborg at least.)
3. Sugru doesn't need her the same way he did as a child.  As an adult, he no longer needs her as the mother figure that he saw her as at the beginning of the first relationship (And the reason I believe he let her into his life)

Can anyone argue or refute this? I don't like coming to this conclusion and would appreciate it if someone would refute me.

Actually I think your first impression was correct.  Maybe not ashamed, but he knew that twenty years had changed him.  In many ways he was the same boy Mahoro met twenty years ago; having suffered some terrible losses in his life (including Mahoro).  Only now, he had twenty years to build walls so that it might not happen again.

I think Mahoro's response and Suguru's reaction to it are equally important.

As for whether their relationship would work... well that could be the topic of an entire magna series.

At least as far as I was able to pick up from thr Manga, only Suguru's hands are replacements (unlike the anime where it sound like very little of Suguru is original equipment).  I think that is why there is the focus on his hands.

Also, I think that although the their relationship may have started with Mahoro as a mother figure, that relationship matured to the point of Suguru thinking of Mahoro at least as a companion by the end of the story.
