Questions/Speculations
« le: 29 juillet 2006 à 20:54:53 »

Over time, some questions have come to mind, and I eventually figured I'd post them here to see if anyone has any ideas. These are in no particular order; I am writing them as I remember them.

1. What exactly is Mahoro like on the inside? She appears to need to eat, as she gets hungry when she doesn't. I kind of assumed her to be much like a regular human inside, but made with synthetic materials, New Battlestar Galactica-Cylon style. However, the anime makes a point of stating that her technology uses screws, though the manga makes a point of stating that her technology doesn't use screws.

2. Are the Saint enemies she usually fought organic or robots, not counting warriors such as Ryuga? They seem to be like robots in the first episode, though when she defeats the giant one and it falls to the ground, you see a blood-like fluid dripping from its eye socket. It makes no reference in the show as to whether they're organic, mechanical or both; Mahoro simply refers to them as "weapons."

3. This one applies to the manga only. In volume 8, after both Slash and the Sylpheed seem to have been destroyed, Mahoro comments that she is out of support mech. However, in one of the previous volumes (I can't remember which one), when she is chasing the panty thief ninja, she appears to have at least two more support robots, in the form of a giant hand and a winged dragon. What happened to them? Did they stop functioning between volumes or did Nakayama simply forget about them? It seems odd to use all your force against a panty thief ninja, but not use the same force when you're actually being pursued by a powerful organization who's trying to kill you.

4. It is mentioned in episode 10 that Mahoro's completion was rushed. Would she have had a longer lifespan if it hadn't?

4. Finally, this one only applies to the anime, and is open to interpretation. This has been discussed before, but I'm not sure there was ever a common consensus. During the "dream" sequences in episodes 12 and 26, are they, in fact, dreams? I had assumed they were memories/flashbacks that Mahoro was having to happy times when she went on picnics with her friends, but most others seem to think they were dreams of her own musing.

3) Those other support mechas I'm guessing were purely jokes...had they been "seriously canon" (to the serious side of the plot, I mean), they somewhat render support mechas like Slash underpowered...and by looks, I'm guessing Mahoro would be physically weaker as well (then again, I question why the supposed ultimate combat mecha is in the physical form of a small-framed, teenaged girl...sure, there's that argument of "fighting with the power of the heart", but then why give the poor girl an underdeveloped lolita body to constantly fret over?....ah well, it's a strange manga, to say the least...)
Looking at the very first scene in the first episode, you see Mahoro easily slash away an enemy much bigger than her with her Shining Darkness attack, showing that she was clearly the stronger one despite her much smaller size.

And for basic physics reasons, those other huge mechas would not necessarily be much stronger than Mahoro and/or Slash. If you increase someone's size by a factor of n, strength would be increased by a factor of n2, while weight would be increased by a factor of n3. Thus if you increase someone's size one thousand times, strength would be increased a million times, and weight would be increased a billion times. You'd have to modify it heavily to increase leg strength, and it would still be quite ungainly.

Also note that a larger body means it takes longer for the brain to send signals to the rest of the body, meaning slower reaction time. She would lose a lot of her agility and be a bigger target as well. A human-size weapon may actually be quite ideal.

As for the "lolita body to constantly fret over", nobody expected Mahoro to have the "heart"/"soul"/"ghost in the shell" that she did, and was designed purely for battle purposes. A thinner frame would be better suited for battle, as would smaller breasts. It is for that reason that most female athletes have small breasts.

(btw, you had two 4th points when I answered :/)
Erm... uh... yeah, I... meant... to do... that...

4a) Was that her completion, or her tests to environmental robustness? I'd have thought they wouldn't be able to modify her further once she had actually been activated...and longer lifespan or not if she was actually rushed, I don't think so, unless they would've developed the ability for her to recharge her batteries through normal organic processes or gave her a recharge port of some kind (I'll just.........stop there..........there's always something wrong if a girl has a "recharge port"............*shudder*...........)

4b) I'm currently of the impression that it never physically happened, but was an abstraction of what their souls quietly said to each other in "another place, another time". Then again, we didn't see all of Mahoro's days, in which case I'd think that it's a combination of Mahoro's memories blended with her thoughts and emotions...

I would have to agree on these points.  Towards the end when Vesper repairs her, the doctor notes that their technology only repaired her physical appearance, meaning her internal parts were beyond Earthling comprehention.  As for the second one, I also think it's a daydream.  When you remember the good times, especially when they are coming to an end, I'm sure you also have wishes of what could have been as well, which is what I put those scenes into.

Regarding the comment about her being a female, it seems that she was given the heart of Saint, and those closest to this and Matthew, from what we saw in the Anime, were also female.

It seems that EVERY anime android eats, sleeps, bathes and does all sorts of human things. And most of the female models are well endowed. And every one loves the baths. One would think that their innards would rust out with all the bathing! But let's not carried away with science lest it ruin good opportunities for fan service.

In Mahoro's case, the eating/sleeping thing is explained in Volume 8 of the Manga.  Milleniums ago a Dr. Mahoro created a computer program and gave it a eating and sleeping function so she could share these things with her "creation".  The computer program was then built into a being, which became Matthew of Saint, who V1046-R Mahoro is patterned after.

The question which is never explained is why Mahoro was given such a short operating span. No other android, Ryuga, Slash Feldrance or anyone else seemed to be concerned about being on the clock. Ryuga, in fact, shows up 20 year's later fit as a fiddle. We know that Suguru's grandfather was connected to Saint though his relationship with Lisa. The Manga states that Mahoro was given to Vesper to be the perfect combination of human will and the soul of Saint. Perhaps they set a time limit on this experiment. It would seem that it would be a rather routine thing for Saint technology to dupe another Mahoro, and the anime appears to hint at this when Lisa tells Minuru "not to worry about big sister".

-IT WAS THE WILL OF MATTHEW.-

The writers of Mahoromatic did not introduce elements to the story casually, they ALL were there for a reason.

Mahoro's lifespan was as long as it needed to be for her to fullfill her mission. Matthew had a plan and it was for Vesper to be a 'blocking force' that would prevent a direct confrontation between Saint and Managment by complecating the situation. Matthew projected that in nine years they should be able to subdue Managment without problems. Having Mahoro involved at this point would just complacate the situation. Due to unexpected curcumstances Mahoro continued in operation past the planned time. This is why Ryuga was sent to deal with Mahoro, though that did not turn out as planned by Matthew either. Suguru messed that up.

I would like to believe that Matthew's plan for Suguru was to have Mahoro dissapear and for Ryuga and Sarah to step in and replace her as his protector and emotional support.

When the orginal plan of Matthew failed that left Sarah with not much of a role. It seemed to me as if she was set to become a much bigger chacter but that never happened because Mahoro survived.

Managment also spoiled the plans of Matthew when they made advancements much faster than Matthew had thought possable. This changed the 'end game'. She had 'Leader' take out Managment leadership in exchange for giving Mahoro the power to protect Suguru at the end. Did you notice how she got her 'health' back right about the time that Hayato began to plan his own exit?

Mahoromatic is a great story because not everything is made obvious. If you study it carefully you will find many 'nuts' to crack!

That's quite an interesting observation, but where do you get the evidence for it? I mean, Mahoro may not have as much of a purpose then, but it seems rather cold for Matthew to decide that she should just die when she's no longer needed for that purpose.

Also keep in mind that Mahoromatic is not Evangelion of Fooly Cooly; not everything in the show has a deeper meaning and some is just there for a plot device or entertainment (giant crab robot that rips off women's clothes).

Mahoro was only at Vesper because Matthew chose to put her there. After she exploded she was still a part of Matthew and not 'dead'. I don't see that, from Matthew's perspective she was going to die after nine years, she would just be coming 'home'.

I really think it is too much of a coincidence that Mahoro was scheduled to go off line just as the Saint/Managment conflict was coming to a climax.

In addition, since there was no obvious reason to allow Ryuga to fight Mahoro in a 'Death' battle and since Matthew controled Saint I am suggesting that the most likely reason for its being allowed to happen was that Matthew wanted Mahoro back with her and seperated from Vesper.

I would point to Mahoro's restored 'health' at the end as a sign that Matthew could have extended Mahoro's time if she saw it as necessary. It only happened when Matthew had a reason.

Ask Hayato about Matthew's plans and how stubborn and cold hearted she could be! They cost him his wife!

If you assume that there are firm reasons that things happen to the chacters and look hard for them you might find them, if you assume that things happen at the wimsey of a bored and lazy writer than you will miss a lot!

I don't think the writers were "bored and lazy"; there are just things that make for a better story that don't really have much logic. If you're going to worry about probability, consider the crab robot again.

Also, I'm pretty sure it was insinuated (at least in the manga) that Management killed Suguru's mother.

When given a reasonable explanation or an explanation of luck look hard for reason first. Prehaps the 'crazy crab' was looking for Mahoro! I hadden't given it much thought. That's one of the reasons I am glad for your responces here. Thank You!

I'm not sure what brought up the subject of Suguru's mother, but the possability you mention had occured to me and I see no reason to reject it. Have I mistaken Suguru's father and grandfather? Hayato is the grandfather and Verpers leader? He was the one who said he lost Leesha to Matthew and that's what I was refering to but maybe I have the name wrong.

Yuichiro is Suguru's Grandfather.  Ryo was his father and Yuuka was his mother (killed in an automobile accident that at least in the Manga looked like it was engineered by Kaemisa).  Yuuka was the daughter of Yuichiro and Leesha.
